Reunion - Vancouver, Canada - 14th & 15th May 2004
Photos & report supplied by Martin Langley
Swan-E-Set Golf and Country Club – the club house
A total of 20 Old Cambrians and companions gathered at the Swan-E-Set Golf and Country Club near Pitt Meadows east of
Vancouver for an enjoyable evening on 14th May 2004. The club is set in beautiful surroundings, and has a unique connection
to the Prince of Wales School. Old Cambrian Mike Pickett, prior to retirement 5 years ago, owned the nursery that provided
most of the native trees and shrubs on the golf course and gardens that surround the club house. As a founder member of the
club, Mike was able to set up a delicious pasta dinner at a very reasonable price.
After dinner attendees reminisced over
their days at the PoW. The senior OC present, Tom Scott, who was there during WW2, recalled the temporary relocation of the
school to Naivasha during the war. Tom mentioned a book to which he has contributed, entitled “Childhood Memories of
Colonial East Africa 1920-1963”, a collection of 70 memories recalled by those who were born in or went to school in the
three EA territories. Cost of the 250 page book is £10.00 to £14.50 depending on where it is be sent –

The day following the dinner, Peter Salmon (spectator), Mike Pickett, Ced Snaith, Ian Roberts and Martin Langley played a
round of golf at the club. Many will remember Peter (aka “Samaki”, Nicholson 1955-1960) who played trombone in the band and
whose father, “Samaki” Salmon, taught at the school from the late 1940’s to 1964 and was housemaster of Hawke for many
years. Mr. Salmon Snr is now a magnificent 91 years old and living on Victoria Island - Peter reports that his father is in
good shape and mentally sharp but his vision and hearing are fading. After the golf, Peter with wife Diane joined Mike,
Martin, Ian and Ced plus spouses at Mike’s house for another round of socializing. All in all a very successful weekend
reunion with much laughter and story telling.
