Hugh Cowie was a pupil at the Prince of Wales School from 1949 to 1953. He was a prefect in Junior House in 1952, and
was a School Prefect and Head of Clive House in 1953. He went up to Oxford University (Brasenose College) to study Modern
Languages, and returned to the Prince of Wales School as a teacher from 1961 until the end of 1964. He then became
Headmaster of Pembroke House at Gilgil
Hugh's father was Colonel H. Mervyn Cowie, CBE who was also an "old boy" of the school having left in 1922 - the school at the time was
called the European Nairobi School. An extract from the 1960 Impala magazine, in the Decorations & Awards section:
CBE: H.M. Cowie (1922) in the New Year Honours list. Colonel Cowie has been Director of the Royal National Parks of
Kenya since 1954, and in the words of the citation, "has made a unique contribution to the preservation of wild life in
Kenya". He has, for some years, been a nominated member of the Legislative Council and, during the Emergency, was Director
of Manpower.
