Prince of Wales School CCF Cartoon Drawings 1952
Cartoons and text supplied by Peter Hays
Here are two cartoons (author was Barry Coutts and dated on the back as 23/12/1952) which used to hang in the study of Mr. W J H (Bill)
Liversidge when he was a master at The Prince of Wales School.
The cartoons show the CCF 'marching' past their C.O., Bill Liversidge (6ft 4ins tall) with Sir Ernest
Vasey, a Government official who was visiting the School for an inspection. Bill's son, Peter, tells me that his father always
said that all those depicted are recognisable, and that he used to name them. Sadly, the names
were not recorded, but possibly there are some Old Cambrians out there who might recognise some
of them.
In the late 1940s, Bill Liversidge was firstly Assistant Housemaster and then Housemaster of
New House, subsequently named Grigg House, and he also commanded the School's Combined Cadet
Force.
Bill Liversidge had taught before World War II at Diocesan College (Cape Town, South Africa),
also known as Bishop's, the greatest school in the Empire; from where he joined the local
regiment, The Duke of Edinburgh's Own Rifles at the outbreak of war, serving with them in
Abyssinia, the Western Desert and Italy.
Arguably the best teacher at PoW in my time, many of us had him to thank for our
Distinctions in the School Cert.
Barry Coutts (Hawke 1949-1952) comments:
Just thought you might be interested to know that I drew the cartoons taken
from the Impala mag and kept by Bill Liversidge. He later lived in
Abingdon and became a politician (I think) whilst we lived in Oxford. I
do remember that he was hugely impressed with the likeness that he thought
I achieved of him! So they still exist - amazing! (29 August 2003)
